Modernist Architecture

After seeing the Miro, we took a taxi back to Jeff's place. Did we have lunch before all that, with Rich? I don't remember. Anyway, I think that same day we went to Parc Guell, a "planned community" commissioned by Senor Guell and partially carried out by Gaudi.

It has a church, cool naturalistic walkways with artificial stalactities and interesting parabolic curves. Tiled mosaic stuff is everywhere. The most interesting thing there is probably the giant covered marketplace, with many (60?) doric columns supporting a domed roof. The roof is all tiled mosaics---Jeff's favorite is an octopus. On top of the roof is a large sandy plaza overlooking the city with curving tiled anatomically scuplted bench wrapping around the circumference. Apparently Gaudi had a naked person sit in clay to get the shape.

The park was closed by the time we were ready to go, and the entrance was locked! Fortunately some really cute kids told us how to get out. On the way out, trying to spot a taxi to take us home, I saw this really cool graffiti:

That night we (me, Jeff, Nisha, Miguelangel, Jose-Luis) went out and drank a lot---cider, jaguar milk, wine---ending up at a bar where we had Absinthe (absenta in Spanish) which is illegal in most of the rest of the world.
